Pomegranate

Pomegranate carries a naturally gnarled, twisting trunk from a young age, orange-red flowers through summer, and — on a mature tree — genuine small fruit that can colour and even ripen. It wants full sun and real heat to flower and fruit well, and drops leaves readily in cold, sulking rather than dying.

Let the top few centimetres dry between waterings. Roughly every 2 days in spring, 2 in summer, 3 in autumn and 6 in winter.

Full sun, as much as you can give it.

Winter

Hardy once established; needs shelter below this in a pot. Protect it when the forecast drops below -6 °C.

Feeding

Every 14 days, Apr to Sep, paused in the hottest weeks.

Repotting

Every 2 to 3 years, as buds swell, in Mar or Apr.

Growth

Fast growing. Hardy in zones 7 to 10.
