Clip and grow: shaping with cuts, not wire

Clip and grow builds a branch's movement over several seasons of cuts rather than one session of bending: let a shoot extend, cut back to a bud pointing the direction you want the line to take next, let that bud extend, cut again. Each cut leaves a small kink at the node, and enough of them in sequence read as a natural, tapering line without any wire at all. It is slower than wiring and asks for patience across years rather than one afternoon, but it suits species that heal fast and branch readily, and it leaves no wire marks to grow out.
