Needle pull: light to the inner buds

A pine left alone thickens its foliage pads from the outside in, and the inner buds that would keep the pad full close to the trunk starve for light long before that becomes obvious. Needle pull corrects it directly: by hand, pull old, inner needles — never the current year's growth at the tips — working branch by branch so light reaches all the way in. The pads stay dense near the trunk instead of hollowing out, and the tree carries an evenly balanced canopy rather than tufts only at the branch ends.
